A Bridge To Reality

Interactive Fiction has been around since the advent of the 'choose your own adventure' style books. Read a page, then be given a few options of pages to flip to where you continue your story. Then came the online interactive mystery games which were primarily text based and led you through a house or a garden or some other environment where you find clues and solve mysteries. Deadline anyone?

A twist came when Alternate Reality Games were developed in the late 1900's and early 2000's and clues that unlocked puzzles in online games were hidden in the real world. Nine Inch Nails famous Year Zero had people scrambling to solve a series of puzzles to be lead to a series of websites.

Hidden Object Puzzles became super-popular once re-imagined on tablets. The introduction of the touch interface brought these puzzles into their own as this allowed the game players to feel like they are interacting with the puzzle.
